Hemp seed after harvest

Have you ever wondered what happens after the harvester leaves the paddock?

The Tasmanian Seed Dressing & Storage facility.

Seed arrives at Tasmanian Seed Dressing & Storage in Carrick in trucks directly from the farm. It is meticulously weighed, monitored, assessed and all required certifications are checked. The seed is then dried and cleaned by passing through a number of mechanical and chemical processes. Hemp seed is separated into sizes (over sized for de-hulling and consumption as food, or undersized for pressing for oil). Seed which is selected to be planted is best managed and harvested if it is of a consistent size, and this comes down to parts of a millimetre. Once the quality is approved, it is transferred to labelled bulker bags in carefully maintained and monitored storage areas, or transported to on-site silos, ready for bulk collection. This facility is so advanced at cleaning and handling hemp that hemp seed is often transported and stored here from the mainland. There is over 3,500 m2 of palletised storage space which is continuously being increased. As well as hemp seed, the facility handles ryegrass, pulses, cereals, brassicas, vegetable and other oil seeds.

Machine processed bulk seed can be stored in silos and packaged or transported later when required.
