As the peak body for hemp in our state, the Tasmanian Hemp Association (THA) is pleased to share an important update regarding the future of our industry.

The Senate Rural and Regional Affairs and Transport References Committee is currently conducting an inquiry into the Opportunities for the development of a hemp industry in Australia. As part of this process, the committee is heading to Tasmania for a public hearing in Longford, providing a critical platform for our local growers, processors, and advocates to be heard at a federal level.

Why This Inquiry Matters

This inquiry is an opportunity to shift the conversation to address challenges facing the hemp industry. The committee is specifically looking at:

  • the potential contribution of an industrial hemp industry to;
    • Australian farming systems, including compatibility with existing agricultural practices, soil health and water usage/conservation,
    • Australian manufacturing, including the production of textiles, bio-based plastics, health and food products,
    • the circular economy, including biodegradable materials and waste reduction,
    • the Australian construction industry, including the use of hemp-based materials and barriers to their adoption, and
    • Australia’s economy, including, but not limited to, job creation, export opportunities and regional development;
  • research and development required to harness the full potential of the hemp industry;
  • regulations related to hemp production, sale and distribution to domestic and export markets; and
  • any other related matters.

How You Can Help

While the window for written submissions has closed, the public hearings are a vital part of the evidence-gathering process. If you are in the Longford area, we encourage you to attend the public gallery to show the Senate Committee the level of community support and passion behind the Tasmanian hemp industry.

A strong showing in the room sends a clear message: Tasmania is ready to lead the way.
